Five swimmers from Margate Swimming Club were given a day to remember recently when they were invited to attend an Olympic Training Day, hosted by the East Invicta Amateur Swimming Association.Charlie Eshelby, Rhys Goldhawk, Charlie Gambrill, Chelsea Jarman and Ellen Berry McIntosh were put through their paces by olympians Chris Cook and Melanie Marshall, alongside swimmers from other East Kent clubs. Chris and Melanie both swam in the Athens and Beijing Olympics for Team GB, with Chris being part of the 4x 100m Medley relay team that finished in sixth place at the 2008 Games. At the Commonwealth Games in 2006 Melanie won six medals and Chris was a double gold medalist, winning the 50m and 100m breaststroke, so they were able to provide the swimmers with a real insight into what it takes to be at the top of a sport. The day consisted of two sessions of pool work as well as a session of land training. There was also a presentation by both olympians and the opportunity to have photos taken and autographs signed. |
