On Saturday 24th February, 27 youngsters from Margate Swimming Club took part in the first of a series of galas organised by friendly rivals, Folkestone.
The competition began with a nail biting squadron relay, where a boy and girl from each age group combined forces to complete the 10-length race. The level of cheering and excitement from the supporters had been established and the team spirit on the poolside was electrifying.
This was the first away gala for some of the younger swimmers, but the nerves turned to adrenalin as nine year old Darryl Scott won the boys butterfly followed by Daisy Priaulx coming a very close second for the girls. Rhys Goldhawk, 13, and William Eaton, 10, both won their butterfly events. Nine-year-old Nicole Weatherly steamed to success in the freestyle with ten-year-old Chelsea Jarman winning the 13 and under freestyle in a personal best time. A string of personal best times for all swimmers followed with ten-year-old Megenta Balcombe winning the girls 13 and under backstroke. Breaststroke swimmers George Delaney, Michael Buckley, Ruby Watson and Hannah Raven all won their events.
The gala ended with another squadron relay – the screaming and splashing was phenomenal with Margate finishing the gala in second place, just behind the host’s A team. All the swimmers are looking forward to the next round to be held at Dover pool in the near future.
